Description
Done by request for Shogunblade to support his exceptional efforts, here is the insignia for Carrier Group (SCVW) 102 "Challenger Wing". One of the parameters that I was given for this insignia was that Challenger Wing was a memorial to the Challenger Disaster in 1986, so with that in mind, I incorporated a black ribbon with the mission patch for STS-51-L over it as well as including 7 stars to represent the 7 astronauts that tragically lost their live on January 28, 1986. lastly, next to the ribbon and mission patch I incorporated the mission number (STS-51-L) and the year of the tragedy.

I recalled seeing an episode of the re-envisioned Battlestar Galactica series that paid homage to the Columbia in a flashback that the character William Adama had. It reminded me when I watched the live footage of the Challenger explosion when I was four years old, and it led me to create an homage of my own to the Challenger crew that passed on in the name of human advancement. This patch sparks the same feeling.
