VFA-103 was originally VF-103 Sluggers, the inherited the markings and moniker from VF-84 when VF-84 was disestablished, just as VF-84 had inherited from VF-61... and the cycle continues all the way back to Tommy Blackburn's VF-17 and the Chance-Vought F4U-1 Corsair.
Simply put, the name and insignia has been passed from squadron to squadron to keep the tradition alive in the United States Navy as squadrons have been deactivated, starting with VF-17 (Fighter Squadron Seventeen) during the Second World War.
